From the tropical glaciers of the Rwenzori Mountains to the lush rainforests of Kibale and Uganda’s rolling coffee highlands, this 12-day adventure is a rare blend of mountain trekking, wildlife encounters, and local culture.
Climb Africa’s legendary “Mountains of the Moon,” stand beneath snow-capped peaks near the equator, track wild chimpanzees, and end your journey with a soul-warming coffee experience on a sustainable farm.
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where a Nandi Adventures representative will warmly welcome you. Transfer to your boutique lakeside accommodation near Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Depending on your arrival time, explore Entebbe’s botanical gardens or simply relax and recover from your journey.
Depart early for the scenic 6–7-hour drive west to Kasese, gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Known as the Mountains of the Moon, the Rwenzoris rise dramatically from the Rift Valley, revealing glaciers, waterfalls, and cloud forests. Check in at your lodge, rest, and prepare for tomorrow’s trek.
After breakfast, transfer to the Trekkers Hostel at the trailhead. Following a safety briefing, begin your ascent through the lush Afro-montane forest to Sine Camp (2,596 m). Hike among giant ferns, moss-draped trees, and endemic birdlife before enjoying a warm dinner and overnight in the heart of the mountains.
Climb higher through the bamboo zone to Mutinda Camp (3,588 m). The trail offers breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls and towering heather trees.
Optional: Hike up to the Mutinda Lookout (3,975 m) for sweeping views of Kasese town and Lake George—a perfect acclimatization trek.
Continue trekking through the Mutinda Valley, a surreal alpine landscape dotted with everlasting flowers and giant lobelias. Reach Bugata Camp (4,062 m) after a challenging but rewarding day. Relax near clear streams and soak in the untouched beauty of the Rwenzori highlands.
Ascend to Hunwick’s Camp (3,874 m) via Bamwanjara Pass (4,450 m). Along the way, spot the scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird, unique to the Rwenzoris, and enjoy vistas of Mounts Stanley, Baker, and Weismann’s Peak.
Cross crystal-clear streams and alpine meadows to reach Margherita Camp, retracing the path of Prince Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, the Duke of the Abruzzi, who pioneered this route in 1906. Rest and acclimatize here in preparation for your summit ascent tomorrow.
Start early (around 2:00 AM) for your summit attempt on Margherita Peak, Africa’s third-highest mountain after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.
Navigate glaciers and steep ridges with expert guides, then celebrate reaching the top of Uganda’s world-famous “Mountains of the Moon.” Descend to Hunwick’s Camp for a well-earned rest.
Hike through alpine valleys and across ancient glacial ridges to Kiharo Camp, surrounded by lush forest and dramatic cliffs.
Optional: Add an ascent to Weismann’s Peak (4,620 m) for spectacular panoramic views.
Enjoy a final descent through waterfalls, mossy rocks, and pristine forest to the base of the mountains. After debriefing with park rangers, transfer to Kibale National Park, home to the world’s densest population of wild chimpanzees.
Check in at your forest lodge and relax.
After a briefing, set off on a guided chimpanzee trek through Kibale’s tropical forest. Watch these intelligent primates play, groom, and communicate in their natural habitat.
In the afternoon, visit a local coffee estate to learn the art of bean-to-cup coffee making—roasting, brewing, and tasting Uganda’s finest Arabica.
Start your morning with a freshly brewed cup of Ugandan coffee. Take a final tour of the farm, meet the farmers behind the beans, and learn how community-based tourism supports over 800 local families.
After this meaningful farewell, transfer back to Entebbe for your departure or onward safari.
Optional extensions include Queen Elizabeth National Park or gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
Book and pay for your trekking permit early. We advise payment 6 months plus especially if you plan to travel in the high season June - September.
Note: We can only guarantee a Gorilla and or Chimpanzee tracking permit availability by booking with payment.
