After breakfast, take a scenic domestic flight to Pokhara, a serene lakeside city known as the gateway to Nepal’s western Himalayan trekking routes. During the flight, enjoy breathtaking aerial views of snow-covered peaks, deep river valleys, and terraced hillsides. Upon arrival, transfer to your lakeside hotel. The rest of the day is free for relaxation or optional sightseeing, such as walking along Phewa Lake, visiting viewpoints, or enjoying the peaceful café culture. This day also serves as a preparation phase for the upcoming high-altitude journey into Mustang’s dry Himalayan region.

Fly to Jomsom, a windy high-altitude valley located between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. As you land, the environment immediately transforms into a dry, rugged, and cold Himalayan desert atmosphere. From Jomsom, begin your trek along the Kali Gandaki River valley, walking through wide riverbeds, rocky terrain, and barren cliffs shaped by strong Himalayan winds. The trail is relatively easy but scenic, offering constant views of dramatic mountains and eroded canyon walls. Gradually, you will arrive at Kagbeni, a historic settlement filled with narrow alleys, ancient monasteries, prayer wheels, and traditional Tibetan-style houses. Kagbeni serves as the official gateway to Upper Mustang.

After permit verification, you officially enter the restricted region of Upper Mustang. The trekking trail changes dramatically as you move into a dry, high-altitude desert environment with deep river gorges, wind-carved cliffs, and colorful sandstone formations. The path includes gradual ascents, rocky steps, and narrow canyon sections that require steady pacing. Along the way, you will pass isolated villages, ancient chortens, and prayer flags fluttering across the barren landscape. This section provides a strong sense of entering a hidden Himalayan kingdom untouched by modern development. The day ends at Chele, a small but scenic village surrounded by dramatic terrain.

Today is more physically demanding as you cross several high Himalayan passes including Taklam La and Dajori La. The ascent involves steep rocky trails, switchbacks, and exposed ridges that offer breathtaking panoramic views of deep valleys and distant snow-capped peaks. The landscape is extremely dry and open, with minimal vegetation and wide desert-like plateaus stretching across the horizon. After crossing the passes, the trail descends into secluded valleys where traditional Tibetan-influenced villages appear. The combination of altitude gain, wind exposure, and rugged terrain makes this one of the most adventurous days of the trek before reaching Syangboche.
Accommodation: Tea house in Syangboche
The trail continues through vast open desert landscapes surrounded by red cliffs, eroded hills, and ancient geological formations. You will walk alongside long stretches of mani walls carved with sacred Buddhist inscriptions, reflecting centuries of spiritual devotion. The route includes gentle ascents and descents across dry valleys and small farming settlements adapted to harsh mountain conditions. As you approach Ghami, the village becomes more prominent, with traditional houses, fields, and monasteries forming a culturally rich settlement in the heart of Upper Mustang.

This section of the trek passes through one of the most historically significant landscapes of Upper Mustang. The trail follows ancient trade routes across high plateaus and arid valleys shaped by wind erosion over thousands of years. You will pass prayer flags, chortens, and small meditation sites used by monks for centuries. The terrain feels remote and spiritual, with very few signs of modern life. Eventually, you arrive at Tsarang, a culturally important village featuring a fortress-style palace, red monastery, and traditional Tibetan architecture preserved for generations.
Accommodation: Tea house in Tsarang
Today’s trek leads to the legendary walled city of Lo Manthang, the ancient capital of Upper Mustang. The trail gradually opens into wide desert plains and scenic valleys with distant mountain views. As you approach the city, you will notice large protective walls surrounding the settlement, built to protect it from harsh winds and invasions. Inside, you will find royal palaces, monasteries, and narrow alleyways that preserve centuries of Tibetan Buddhist heritage and royal culture. This arrival marks the cultural and emotional highlight of the entire journey.
Accommodation: Guesthouse in Lo Manthang
A full exploration day dedicated to discovering the cultural richness of Lo Manthang and surrounding areas. You will visit ancient monasteries, meditation caves, and the famous Chhoser cave complex carved into steep cliffs. These caves are believed to have been used for meditation, shelter, and spiritual practice for centuries. You will also interact with monks and local villagers, learning about Tibetan-influenced traditions, rituals, festivals, and daily life that has remained unchanged in this remote Himalayan kingdom.

Begin your return journey through alternative scenic trekking routes across the high desert plateau. The trail offers new perspectives of cliffs, valleys, and wind-shaped landscapes that were not visible during the ascent. The terrain remains dry, open, and peaceful, creating a reflective atmosphere after exploring the ancient kingdom. Gradually descend back to Ghami while enjoying the silence and vastness of the Mustang region.
Accommodation: Tea house in Ghami
Continue descending through familiar trails as you exit the restricted zone of Upper Mustang. The landscape slowly transitions from dry desert terrain into greener river valleys along the Kali Gandaki corridor. Passing through Kagbeni again, you continue onward to Jomsom, marking the end of your trekking journey. This final trekking day is often celebrated with your guide and team.
Accommodation: Hotel or tea house in Jomsom
Take an early morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, followed by a connection back to Kathmandu. As you leave the mountains behind, you reflect on your unforgettable journey through ancient caves, desert valleys, Buddhist monasteries, and the mystical hidden kingdom of Upper Mustang. The trek concludes with lifelong memories of one of Nepal’s most unique Himalayan experiences.
