Lamu town has several interesting museums and exhibits which are well worth a visit. Places of interest you will visit include Lamu Fort – a popular tourist attraction and a World Heritage site, located in Lamu town. It was built between 1813 and 1821, a two-story building with stylish Swahili architecture. Lamu Fort is now an environmental museum and a library. Swahili House Museum and Lamu Museum – a grand Swahili building established to illustrate Lamu’s history and culture. Other interesting places included in the tour are Lamu Market, the German post office (the first post office in Lamu), Furniture stores, and Kikoy Stores. Other places include Art galleries, the ancient Pwani Mosque, the central Riyadh Mosque, and the Donkey Sanctuary – a facility that provides treatment for all donkeys in Lamu. Since there is no motorized transportation, the only means of transportation are the donkeys. There are about 2000 to 3000 working donkeys on the island. The Donkey Sanctuary provides the donkey with treatment free of charge. Lamu’s narrow streets remain unchanged, and in the markets and squares around the fort, life moves at the same pace as it always has. The port of Lamu has existed for at least a thousand years. Most buildings are constructed out of local materials including coral-rag blocks for the walls; wooden floors supported by mangrove poles, Makuti roofs, and intricately carved shutters for windows. Special highlights of the tour include: - Live music performances at Moonrise Restaurant. - Visiting the Lamu Museum and Fort. - Exploring the Arabian Dhow, offering breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. - Neighborhood visits to interact with local craftsmen, such as woodcarvers, coconut farmers, and furniture makers. - Strolling through the Donkey Sanctuary, a serene haven for these gentle animals. - A final excursion to Shela Island, a hidden gem off the coast.
