Travel Itinerary
Your adventure begins with an early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the gateway to the Danakil Depression. Upon arrival, you will meet your professional guide and driver before starting the overland journey toward the surreal landscapes of Dallol, a drive of approximately 7–8 hours through the vast Afar desert. Along the way, witness the unique lifestyle and resilience of the Afar people in this harsh environment.
Arriving in the late afternoon, explore the spectacular hydrothermal fields of Dallol, famous for its vibrant sulfur springs, salt formations, and colorful mineral deposits. Continue to Lake Assal to enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the salt flats. Afterward, drive to Hamed Ella for overnight camping under the stars.
Wake up early and drive to Lake Assal for a stunning sunrise view, followed by breakfast in this remarkable setting. Continue your exploration across the vast salt desert, visiting the colorful sulfur fields, salt mountains, bubbling lakes, and unique geological formations that make this region unlike anywhere else on Earth. You will also have the opportunity to relax and swim in the natural salt pools of Lake Karum.
After enjoying the morning’s highlights, begin the drive toward Erta Ale. En route, stop for lunch under the shade of palm trees in the desert. Upon arrival at the volcano base camp, take a short rest before beginning a gentle hike of approximately 30 minutes to the summit.
At the top, witness the incredible lava lake of Erta Ale—one of the few permanent lava lakes in the world. After spending time admiring this natural wonder, descend back to camp for overnight.
