Travel Itinerary
Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by an Essence Ethiopia Tours representative and transferred to the domestic terminal for your flight to Lalibela — Ethiopia’s most iconic historical destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its extraordinary rock-hewn churches.
After arrival and hotel check-in, begin exploring the first cluster of Lalibela’s remarkable churches, carved directly from solid volcanic rock during the 12th and 13th centuries under King Lalibela. These masterpieces remain active centers of worship and pilgrimage today.
Highlights include:
• Bete Medhane Alem — believed to be the largest monolithic church in the world
• Bete Maryam — famous for its beautiful frescoes and spiritual symbolism
• Bete Meskel and neighboring chapels connected by ancient tunnels and passagewaysAs you walk through the sacred complex, your guide will explain the fascinating history, legends, and religious significance of these architectural wonders.
Overnight: Tabor Hotel Lalibela
After breakfast, continue visiting the remaining churches of Lalibela, including the most iconic and visually impressive church:
• Bete Giyorgis — the magnificent cross-shaped church carved from a single block of stone and regarded as the masterpiece of Lalibela
Depending on time availability, you may also visit nearby monasteries or traditional local homes to gain deeper insight into Ethiopian Orthodox traditions and rural community life.
In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa.
