Travel Itinerary
Early in the morning, fly to Semera — gateway to the dramatic Afar region. Upon arrival, begin your overland expedition into the legendary Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth.
Drive through lava fields, endless desert plains, and vast salt flats while encountering Afar pastoral communities who have adapted to survive in this extreme environment for centuries.
As the landscapes become increasingly surreal, enjoy spectacular desert scenery before arriving at your campsite.
Overnight: Camping in Danakil
Rise early for an unforgettable excursion to Dallol, one of the world’s most extraordinary geothermal sites. The area is famous for its colorful mineral formations, sulfur springs, salt terraces, and hydrothermal landscapes that resemble another planet.
Continue across the expansive salt plains where camel caravans transport salt blocks along ancient trade routes still used today.
Later, proceed to Erta Ale Volcano — one of the few continuously active volcanoes on Earth. After sunset, begin a hike to the crater rim to witness the spectacular glowing lava lake beneath the night sky.
